Membership is by nomination only. Nominations are accepted only from current members of the Society.

Nominations for election to membership in 2009 must be submitted to the Secretary-Treasurer by January 19, 2009.

Nomination materials:

  • A letter of nomination by the nominator (active member).
  • Supporting letters from two additional members (active or emeritus) of the Society, preferably from institutions other than the one where the nominee is located.
  • The candidate's curriculum vitae and bibliography; meritorious epidemiological papers should be "starred." Please be certain that the nominee's current job is clearly indicated.
  • Reprints of at least three meritorious publications with the nominee as first author should be included; do not send more then three publications. If the nominee is not the first author on any of these publications, please indicate the reason whey this is not the case.

Criteria for Membership as recommended by the Membership Committee

In evaluating a nominee, consideration should be given to the nominee's epidemiologic accomplishments and contributions as evidenced by publications (see below), academic activities (such as supervision of students), and other aspects of professional work such as administrative and community service.

The nominee should demonstrate primary commitment to the practice of epidemiology and is to support the American Epidemiological Society by attending and participating in its annual meetings.

The nominee should be an active epidemiologist who continues to demonstrate quality epidemiologic accomplishments by deed or published account and who is expected to remain productive in the foreseeable future. The nominee's achievements will be evaluated by nothing accomplishments in the following areas:

  • Productivity as documented by:
    • Quality original research, publications in refereed journals and/or collaborative research, review articles, or chapters in textbooks
    • The nominee should be first author on more multiple epidemiologic publications
    • Evidence of excellence in teaching epidemiology to students and others
  • Evidence that published original work has had an impact on the field, as evidenced by:
    • Being cited in references by others and/or
    • Having influenced policies and decisions
  • Academic achievements and advancement, or its equivalent if in a non-academic position.
  • Accomplishments may also be measured by providing leadership to peers and/or students, and by the quality of work produced by students the nominee has directly supervised.
