Anne Schuchat to Be Acting CDC Director
January 18, 2017
Anne Schuchat, MD, will take the reins at the CDC starting at noon on Friday, Jan. 20, the agency confirmed Wednesday.
She will replace Tom Frieden, MD, who will hand in his resignation on Inauguration Day. Schuchat’s title will be acting director.
Schuchat will provide continuity at the CDC, as the agency awaits direction from the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
She has been principal deputy director of the CDC since September 2015. Schuchat will be the third woman to lead the agency. In 1998, Claire Broome, MD, was named acting CDC director after David Satcher, MD, left to become U.S. Surgeon General. Julie Gerberding, MD, also led the CDC from 2002 to 2008.
Schuchat has been with the agency since 1988, when she joined as an epidemic intelligence service officer. She was director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases from 2006 to 2015.
She will remain in her post until the incoming Health and Human Services secretary officially appoints a director. Trump has nominated Georgia Congressman Tom Price, an orthopedic surgeon from Atlanta, for the HHS post.
